Accessibility at the Revelstoke Railway Museum

The Revelstoke Railway Museum is committed to creating an inclusive, welcoming, and accessible experience for all visitors. We believe everyone should be able to explore and enjoy the museum comfortably and with independence.

Thanks to support from the Columbia Basin Trust Arts Grant, we are actively improving accessibility across our site and visitor services. A range of complimentary supports are currently available, including mobility aids, assistive listening devices, and wayfinding supports—all free for use with museum admission.

We are continuing to enhance accessibility through ongoing upgrades and new tools to better support visitors with diverse physical, sensory, cognitive, and communication needs.

Stay tuned as we continue to implement additional accessibility upgrades throughout the museum.

Parking

Two accessible parking spaces are available onsite. They are located beside the museum. Step free access

Accessibility

The Museum building is wheelchair accessible, with ramps and an elevator to move between galleries. At the moment, the steam locomotive and business car, unfortunately, are not wheelchair accessible.

  • A virtual tour is available via QR code for the Business car.

  • There is a video documentary playing for the Steam Locomotive.

The outdoor yard is partially accessible with paved walkways and a covered gazebo for visitor enjoyment.

Upper Floors

The Revelstoke Railway Museum provides lift access to the second floor and mezzanine level, helping ensure that all visitors can experience the full range of exhibits throughout the museum.

The lift is designed to support step-free movement between floors for visitors using wheelchairs, mobility aids, or those who may have difficulty using stairs. Staff are available to assist with lift operation if needed.

Languages

Information panels throughout the galleries are in English, with brochures available in French, Spanish, German, Russian, Dutch and Chinese upon request.

Washrooms

Briefly describe your degree and any other highlights about your studies you want to share. Be sure to include relevant skills you gained, accomplishments you achieved or milestones you reached during your education.

Mobility Aids

To support ease of movement throughout the museum, a range of mobility aids are available for visitor use free of charge with admission. These supports are intended to help ensure a comfortable and accessible experience for all guests.
Available mobility aids include wheelchairs (including one bariatric wheelchair), rollator walkers with seats, walking canes (including a wide-base cane for added stability), portable cane seats, and a portable access ramp for threshold and entry assistance.

Hearing Aids

A hearing loop (induction loop) system is available at the Admissions Desk. Visitors with hearing aids or cochlear implants equipped with a telecoil (T-coil) can connect directly to the system to receive clearer communication with staff by reducing background noise and improving speech clarity.

In addition, a personal amplification device is available to support one-on-one listening throughout the museum.

Visual Aids

We are continuing to expand visual accessibility supports as part of our ongoing improvements to ensure all visitors can comfortably explore and enjoy the museum.

Sensory Aids

The Revelstoke Railway Museum offers sensory supports to help create a more comfortable and welcoming experience for visitors who may experience sensory sensitivities, neurodivergence, or cognitive accessibility needs.

A sensory support kit is available upon request and may include items such as noise-reducing headphones and simple tactile or calming aids designed to help reduce sensory overload in busy or stimulating areas of the museum.

Support Animals

Service animals are welcome in the Museum.

Access2

The Revelstoke Railway Museum is proud to be a member of the Access 2 Program, a national initiative that supports affordable access to arts, culture, and recreation for people with disabilities and their support persons.

Persons with a disability will receive admission benefits for a support person, helping to reduce financial barriers and ensure visitors can enjoy their museum experience with the assistance they need.
